Respectfully returned to Bvt Major J R Stone S.A.C. with the information that upon investigation I find that within named children are not bound to Mr. J Crenshaw Mr Crenshaw staes that that Capt Sharp promised to bind the children to him but did not do so as he was relieved from duty shortly afterwards he also stats taht it was the dying request of the mother that he should keep the children until they became of age. and that he never gave any of the children a cruel or unneccessary whipping. Mr Crenshaw is represented to me as being (by both black and whit) a good and kind man to all his laborers. Maggey the within names girl who is 14 yrs of age stae to me that she wished to live with Mr Crenshaw until she was eighteen she was well and warmly clad and from her looks should judge that she was well treated. Mrs. Crenshaw is reported by colored people as bing quite passionate at times and not so kind as her husband I could not find any person that has seen Mr or Mrs Crenshaw whip any of the children

Resp'ty returned to Bvt. Brig Genl. O.Brown Asst Commr. inviting attention to endorsement of Capt J.F. Wilcox. A.S.A.C. We have it from other sources that the charges of Amelia Howard in reference to the children are unjust, and that her statements are not to be relied on.
