To Major Genl. Schofield

I beg to represent to you as chief of this Military dist

That I purchased land near Richmond for Fruit culture on an extensive scale. I last year expended 2500 dolls on the importation of, and planting rare Grape Vines, French Pears, Plums and various other kinds of the best Fruit, all of which, if permitted to mature, will pay well. 

That I am compelled to employ nine or ten Negroes in my vineyards and orchards, and and these Blacks, habitually devour or destroy my best production, as soon as they appear. 

That I took one of the most impudent before Mr Wade J.P. for Henrico, who after a hearing discharged him, having no authority of law to punish for this class of crime. It was not Stealing, for there was no carrying away. It was not Trespass for he was hired on the premises. It did not seem to him a Misdemeanor - and
