Henrico Co. May 15th 1867 General Schofield I am destitute I owe one hundred and twenty five dollars rent. I have six in family. I had to draw some meat & meal from the Government. I can show you a letter from Rev. Mr. Peterkin or any reference you require. I have been sick periodically ever since last August. I was once independent but lost every thing. I am now prostrate. I will come and see you as soon as I get up and if any chance of assistance please leave a note at Mr M.W. Swains Cor. Marshall and 6th Street. I am not able to write. Respectfully John D.
