I ordered 6 men of the guard, all that were not on post, and the Sergt of the guard (Smith C.C. 4th Art'y) and told him that I thought they would be sufficient, and he disagreed with me and asked for more men, and I ordered the Sergt to take these men with Mr. Veach, and told him that I would send after him 7 or 8 men more as soon as I could wake them up. I then turned out 6 Privates and a Sergeant from H.C. 4th Art'y, and told them to follow up and overtake these men what had gone with Sergt Smith.  I told each of these Sergts to assist Mr. Veach in quelling any riot, I turned out the officer and told him to dress himself any be ready for any emergency.  I supposed that there would be no trouble at the place after the soldiers arrived, but after they had been gone about 1/2 an hour I heard a pistol shot in direction of the house, I then ordered out the ambulance, and while waiting for it I heard two musket shots fired in quick succession, I then started with the officer of the day to the scene of the disturbance and when within about 1/2 mile of the place I met my party of soldiers returning they reported that they had 19 negroes prisoners and that one man had been shot. and I then turned around and went back to the fort with the party, one of them reported himself
