together. Near midnight Garner's wife went up stairs and Mathews started for home. When he had proceeded a short distance, Garner (from a window) called him back, saying he wished to see him a moment. Mathews went back and when near the door, Garner rushed out and attacked him with a long sharp knife. Mathews then fell back toward the gate, where he had left his gun, (he says he has been in the habit of carrying his gun with him at night where he went.) Garner following, and striking with his knife.

Mathews picked up his gun which was loaded with slugs and fired on Garner the charge striking him and tearing the top of his shoulder off. Garner then ran away yelling murder. Mathews clothes were cut in several places. He did not try to escape but gave himself up next morning, and was taken to jail with Garner's wife.

Garner is in a critical condition and will probably die.

I am, Colonel,
Very Respectfully,
Your Obed't Serv't.
