being determined to sift the matter well, after examining a large number of witnesses they found evidence of circumstantial character enough to bring a verdict [[strikethrough]] ag [[/strikethrough]] against John Butler & John Johnsen both Freedmen. The verdict is as follows "We the Jury say that Henry Clay Lee came to his death on the night of the 27 day of January 1867 by blows inflicted on his head and strangulation and the said Jury is of the opinion that the said violence and death was inflicted and caused by John Butler and that one John Johnson was then in there aiding and abetting the said John Butler in the murder of the said Henry. Clay. Lee."

Butler was a soldier in the U.S. Colored troops, and will not have any mercy shown him on that score. The only reason believed for the murder was that Henry was supposed to have money. He was industrious and was liked by all who knew him black and white.
