With reference to the statement made by Rev. Ephraim Lawson, (colored) in which he said that I told him that I had been released, by Gen'l Brown, from payment of the eleven ($11.) dollars received for sale of clothing.  I simply wish to say, that he does not quote me quite correctly. What I did tell him was this, "that after my return from the north I had mentioned the subject of the loss of my money, and that of the colored peoples, to Gen'l Brown and asked him if he thought it was my duty, under the circumstances, to make it good. and he told me that he thought I ought to either make it up, or get a release in writing from the Trustees of the Church from so doing.
 
In conclusion, permit me to say that I have the best of reasons for believing that these charges have been either made, or instigated, by Lieut-Cook in a spirit of malice and revenge, and in proof of this you are respectfully refered to the accompanying statements of various parties who with two or three
