are not your true friends. They assume
a friendship, so long, as you will be
subservient to their will, but when you
rise in your manhood, and ask for
your rights, they are ready to drive you
away, unpaid, unprotected" (the sad experience of every day but proves it to be 
too true) We have just passed through a 
bloody war, a war waged by the South
to perpetuate slavery, but the strong arm
of the Government saved the Country, and
set you free, and now your future destiny to a great extent lies in your own
hands. It is for you to demonstrate to the
civilized world, whether your liberty is worth
the purchase. You have now been given
political equality, and it is for you to 
put forth every effort, to elevate your 
social and intellectual qualities. You have a
great work to do; undone, and you go
down. While it is our duty as a Christian
people, to help you and encourage you,
you must learn to stand upon your own
