Nor was there any authority for so doing. There was evidently a mistake on his part. Upon my statement to him, supported by the facts, he acknowledged the error and referred me to the Sec of the Treasury to obtain the restoration of the ground and rent & taxes due me on the property and collected by him under the combined rent of land & house. My letters to the Secy of Treasury & the Supt  of confiscated property remained unanswered. Mr Hudson succeeded Mr Morse and he also continued to collect all the rents from house & land. the same representations were made to him, without any other effect than to acknowledge the mistake & refer me again to the Treasury Dept upon the ground that the rents had been credited to the U.S. & could only be refunded by the Secy. In the meantime it appears that proceedings were in progress before the U.S. District Court here to confiscate & sell this property, both house & land. I knew nothing of these proceedings until they ended in a decree of the Court to sell the property as belonging to White. I then made the facts known to Mr Chandler, the U.S. District Attorney here, who had conducted the proceedings for the U. States. Mr Chandler readily acknowledged the error but as the decree had been entered & the Court adjourned, advised me as the readiest mode of setting the matter right to appear at the Sale of this & other property on the day announced when he would publicly state the facts, the error of the decree & the want of power to sell my property as Mr Whites, and bidding a small amount, to cover the costs, obtain the transfer by the U. States to myself. Mr Chandler was in attendance on the day of the sale, but it was suspended before it reached Whites, so called property and though the sale continued to another day it has not since been resumed.
