Accomac County Virginia
July 21th 1864
to Major Gen Schofield
Sir
I wright you a line to inform you how I have been treated. I was a slave of E.J. Paulson & I worked on the Rebel embankment in 61 in 62 I was sold to Frank Bull who gave his lands for me & after I was freed by Gen Lockwood Mr. Bull refused to pay for me. E.J. Paulson sued Mr. Bull & got judgment & Mr. Bull had the money to pay. Mr. Bulls counsel thinks as I was free when Mr. Bull bought me the money was mine & not Paulsons. You will please give this your attention you can wright to Mr. George T. Garrison who can give you the case as he was Mr. Bulls Counsel.
Very Respectfully
Charles Paulson
