Major - I have the honor to make the following Special report of the persecution by the civil authorities of two returned Colored Soldiers: Thomas and Othello Fraction, late of the 40th US Colored Inft. These Boys were formerly Slaves of Robert L Preston of this county (a Rebel Colonel) and on account of their enlisting in the U.S. Service, met with the displeasure of the said Preston: who threatened to shoot them, Should they ever again return to his premises. Thomas on being advised of the threatening language used by Mr Preston; wrote him a letter, stating in substance, that in case of their return, they would not quietly submit to be fired upon [[strikethrough]]by Mr Preston[[/strikethrough]], but would be prepared to defend themselves - although they did not suppose he would carry the threat into execution. February 1866, having received a Furlough to visit their Homes, they proceeded to the premises of Mr Preston, where their Parents still resided -
