Inclosed, herewith, I have the honor to return letter from Mrs. Martha. M. Robertson to General Schofield, with a report that I have visited the lady and colored children, ((Betty & Edgar) of whom she writes.  She made the same statement to me, also that the Father of the children lives about four miles from Petersburg in Dinwiddie County - his name is Armstead Lee.  That at the time the childrens mother died he had another wife by whom he had five children, that he had never been to see these two until they were free, and he came after them. - they did not know him or remember anything about him.

Mrs. Robertson, Mr. & Mrs. Lane and these children state that when Lee came for them he was very much intoxicated and threatened to murder them if they did not go with him.

The girl is 14 & the boy 9 years old - they are very much attached to Mrs. Robertson and the attachment appears to be mutual, she is teaching them and training them as a very pious mother would her own offspring - I found the
