Genl Brown
My Dear Sir
I wish to say to you that since I have been in this county I have worked very hard for the freedman and his cause. Having been appointed a Member at Large of Registrar for the County Have circulated over 3000 Documents and made speeches and visit Leagues regularly And the Col'd People are in for me to a man and I know I have made many converts to our cause from the Whites. Well I started off to the Convention to Richmond and had been taking on a little but none to hurt any one the first thing I knew Capt Shaum of the Bureau and President of the Board of the County reported me to General Schofield and he has written him to relieve me. Captain Shaum now regrets it. but I cant ask him to revoke it. So I have written the General sending him copies of Letters from the Leading men here and also Judge Amiss of West Va My appointment was given me through my valued friend Gov Pierpont upon his recommendation It was nothing to report but a little indiscretion. Capt is very strict and I have never known military life. So I wish to stay here and I want you
