BUREAU REFUGEES, FREEDMEN AND ABANDONED LANDS,
OFFICE ASS'T. SUP'T. SUB-DISTRICT EMBRACING
NOTTOWAY AND LUNENBURG COUNTIES, VA.
BURKEVILLE, VA., Jan'y 17th 1867.

Brig Gen. O. Brown.
A.A. Adjutant Gen'l.

I have the honor to state, that there is now in Lunenburg Co Jail, Three Freedmen imprisoned, on the charge of murdering a Mr Rowlett at Meherrin, Dec 26th 1866, Owing to the magnitude of the offence, the excited condition of the public mind against the prisoners, And the fact of their having no means to fee a lawyer, They have found it difficult to obtain counsel. A prominent lawyer of this County, has voluntarily offered his services to defend them, his task will be an important and a laborious one, and in as much as he will receive no fees from the parties, I would earnestly recomend (should the charge be a proper one) that he may receive from the Bureau Appropriation, a reasonable compensation for his services.

Respectfully Your Ob'dt Servant.
D.J. Connolly.
