I have the honor to make the following report of a case tried on Monday Sept 23d 1867 in compliance with instructions received from Hd Qrs. Asst Comr State of Virginia

The United States vs John H Hankins } Charge Disturbing divine worship

To the charge the Prisnor pleaded not guilty

David Drew (col'd) after being duly sworn said that on Sunday May 20th 1867 while Amelia Howard (col'd) was preaching at Bacons Castle Church he saw and heard her speak to John H Hankins she said "I wish that man would take off his hat" Hankins then arose and came up to where she was and said "what have you got to do with my hat you damd old bitch and if you don't mind Ile knock your damd old head off, and you had better be carefull or you wont
