thanks to the co-operation of Northern Societies in sending excellent teachers. More white teachers would be sent if board could be obtained for them in the county.

I went to every residence of a white man at City Point last spring to find board for a teacher, but failed. A school is much wanted there. and the Protestant Episcopal Freedmen's Commission are endeavoring to find a competent colored teacher for that point. There is a call for additional schools in all directions, but the interest in this matter by the contributors of funds to the immediate patrons of these Schools, the benevolent Societies, is waning, and I fear a decrease instead of an augmentation of force. after this season.

The best school in my Sub-District outside of this City. is at Lawrenceville. under the charge of Mr and Mrs Burbank. and numbering about 115 scholars. In addition to the ordinary branches of learning taught them, Mrs Burbank has a class in plain sewing and knitting. thus making of her female pupils truly valuable members of the family circle.

There were nearly 2300 pupils enrolled in the colored schools of my Sub-District at the close of the school season. I am promised an increased force of teachers this fall. for Petersburg. Indeed. I cannot obtain suitable buildings for schools. sufficient to employ all the teachers offering for this city until the one I am
