the center of a number of freedmen settlements, consequently the freedmen and freedwomen were driven to the necessity of getting their supplies of fuel chiefly from that source, and they did so until the latter part of the year 1866. Indeed, it is a matter of general notoriety in the county, that the freed people of all classes supplied themselves as they chose with fuel from Mr. Segar's farm while a tree remained.
