Represents case of Henry Duncan, freedman, who loaned $500 in gold to A. Boyd & Son, late Merchants of Boydton, Va, in 1859–60 — Duncan at the time being a slave — taking a note therefore bearing 6% int. After emancipation proclamation, having confidence in the solvency of the firm, he on Feb 12, 62 renewed the note for $520. In 1866 Boyd & Son made a deed of trust, from the benefits of which Duncan was entirely cut off, and having the same facilities for claiming and asserting his rights as others, and now stand [[pa?]] under the laws of Va. for the vindication of his rights, requests the interference of the Comdg General.
