following reasons viz:
1st "Application" for U.S. Bounty &c. with "Proof of cohabitation."
The name of the applicant is believed to be Fault -
The "proof of Cohabitation" must state whether they were slaves or free when married - Send "Certificate of Freedom" in the care of the man
2nd. Application for retained Bounty.
No man of the name of womans husband as therein given appears on our lists - but the name of Lambert Fault appears as belonging to the 1st U.S.C.C. and as enlisting in August 1864.
When application is returned send official copy of "Proof of Cohabitation" and also a reliable affidavit as to the mans death and burial - (Certificate of Minister who buried him would be sufficient.)
Send applications for U.S. Bounty and retained Bounty in separate communications.

I am directed by the Asst. Commissioner to call your attention to the case of a colored child (Betty) indentured to Miss Steptoe of Bedford Co. and abducted by one Dabney who resides near New London, Bedford Co.- and who claims to be some relative of the indentured girl.
If the child is now residing with Dabney you will return her to her mistress Miss Steptoe.

I am directed by the Assistant Commissioner to acknowledge the receipt of your communication dated June 25th 1866, enclosing applications &c. in cases of Clayton Bush, Ballard Copeland, John Henry Clark - Chloe Ann Spruel and Sawyer Newby - for U.S. Bounty &c.
They have all been forwarded to Washington with the exception of that of Clayton Bush which is returned for "Affidavit of Freedom" or copy of "Court Record" required in the cases of members of the 2nd U.S.C.C.
