Elbowoods, North Dak February 1, 1954 Mr. John Shaw Burbank, Oklahoma Dear friend John: It was good to have a letter from you while I was visiting in Washington on Tribal business. I answered this letter from there on January 13 but addressed it, Burbank, California instead of Oklahoma. So naturally it was returned to me unclaimed here. Helen, is doing fine job around the Capitol Hill, as a defender of the Indian rights. She needs every encouragement that we can give her. She told me that she received a nice letterfom [[letter from]] you. I am enclosing herewith a copy of letter from National Park Service pertaining to getting buffalo meat for our next convention the letter is self-explanatory. Now, John, it is up to you to get the ingredients for fried bread and coffee you had better get some evidence to show me that you are keeping your end of the agreement we made in Phoenix, Arizona. I am requesting Helens concurrence to hold this Indian style party for the delegates. I am sure she will find space for us in the program. Dan Madrano was in town too at the same time I was in Washington, D.C. but he never came to the office of the N.C.A.I. But according to the press releases he was representing some 375,000 Indian women favoring the Bricker Amendment and was holding meetings about it. I for one felt that this sort of thing was a bad publicity for the Indians when most of them do not even know what the Bricker amendment is about or will affect them in no way. I deplore such poor publicity stunt. Write again, John. Sincerely I am, Martin Cross, Sr.
