WAR DEPARTMENT,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands,
Washington, Feb. 14th 1867.

Gen. J.M. Schofield

Dear Gen.
As to muster out of Capt. White, Gen. Balloch is very anxious to have him retained. We shall disburse considerable money in Va. and he thoroughly knows his business & does his duty well. He has lost an arm in service & I believe is deserving - and a bonded officer. I give you the substance Gen Balloch's request. If he is satisfactory to you could you not postpone his muster out.

Yours truly
O.O. Howard M.G.
