apprehended. I sought to allay their anxiety and to ascertain whether or not there was any just cause for such fears.  From all I could learn, I could find no sufficient grounds to believe there was any organized plan for an attact upon the Colored people or their meeting.  And I have the assurance from the leading Colored people; that they did not intend any harm, and in no case would they give any cause for complaint or interference.

I was also informed by them in the most positive manner; that if they were attact, they should defend themselves to the bitter end.

Mr Goodyear and myself done all we could to allay their fears, and to assure them, that there was no sufficient cause to fear any such move, on the part of respectable people of the Community.

On arriving at Ayletts we found a large gathering of all classes of people, and most conspicuous among them, were many rough-looking specimens of the poor white trash (so called)
