Resolution of
Northwest Affiliated Tribes

Resolution No. 19

WHEREAS, the attached Resolutions adopted by the Northwest Affiliated Tribes, meeting at Spokane, Washington, August 27-28-29, 1956, have been considered by the National Congress of American Indians at its Annual Convention, and the NCAI finds that the subjects dealt with therein are of concern to the Indian Tribes of the Northwest;

BE IT RESOLVED, that we do express appreciation for the efforts of the Northwest Affiliated Tribes and offer our assistance in any of the matters mentioned therein. (See Attachment I)

Termination of
Klamath Tribe;
Termination, General

Resolution No. 20

WHEREAS, the National Congress of American Indians is emphatically opposed to termination of Federal trusteeship and supervision of Indian affairs without the consultation and consent of the Indian Tribe affected, or where it is clear that termination will abrogate Federal treaties and commitments; and

WHEREAS, it appears that the Klamath Termination Act has already caused great confusion among the Klamath people and that it will undoubtedly result in great loss to them and liquidation of their tribal estate; and

WHEREAS, it is well known to the National Congress of American Indians that only a very strong, well-organized, broadly supported campaign to repeal or amend the legislation will help the Klamath Indian people to save their tribal estate;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the National Congress of American Indians in convention assembled in Salt Lake City, Utah, that the NCAI memorialize the Oregon State Bar Association, the State Federation of Women's Clubs, the church organizations, and other groups to join with Klamath people and the NCAI to bring about public attention, support, and legislation to correct the great wrong which has been done the Klamath people in the passage of the Klamath Termination Act.
