Captain [[?]],

Dear Sir;
I wish to address a letter of Enquiry to you. I have been improperly dealt with by the Civil Authorities here and would like to have my case adjudicated by a military commissioner. I was and am now living on the land of John Wilkinson and there was accounts between us and I demanded a settlement with him and he refused to settle with me and taken a distrain warrant and has sold my property without giving me any chance to defend myself and I have no idea that I could get a fair trial in a court at Hillsville.
I am not acquainted with such matters and wish some information about it.

I am yours truly
Signed, George W. Becknell

P.S. please inform me wheather I can get my case before a military Court and if so how I must proceed about it.

Carroll County, Va, October the 19th 1868

I do here by certify that I am acquainted with the case between Wilkinson and Becknell and am certain that the above allegations is correct and true.
