if the victim be a "nigger". At a regular meeting of the county court in August last this case was called, the prisoner placed on trial and acquitted. During the trial a most disgraceful scene presented itself. The council for the prisoner was in a state of intoxication, several of the jury were in a like predicament, one of whom became so interested in the prisoners safety that he actually arose and in open court commenced arguing the case for him. Witnesses while under oath were given the lie by the prisoner. The drunken council berated the court, the jury, the Commonwealth Attorney and everyone who came in contact with his garrulous tongue. The court utterly failed to preserve order and were obliged to adjourn to save themselves from further disgrace; Mr Benj. A Nance a highly respectable citizen of Charles City Co.
