and I overheard a conversation in the stage, to the effect that they were making it so hot for the teacher - Miss Coulter - that she had stated that she must leave. This lady has at last provided lodgings for herself - has a good room - and will be supported in her work to the extent of the ability of the Agent in charge and myself. 

Political
Political antagonism is as bitter as can exist without violence. Leading men in this County are the most violent in their denunciations of the freedmen, and the smaller men follow such most faithfully. The staple of public speeches is that white immigrants must be brought into and Colored men driven out of the County. From what I could gather the language used by the leader of the Colored men is temperate, and they are urged to be industrious and law abiding.

Roads
Roads are in a bad and even dangerous condition. Little road duty has been preformed by freedmen or whites, and - as in other counties - it will be a long time before the roads can be properly repaired by unpaid labor. 

Crops
Except upon poor worn out land, Crops - especially corn - look well. Wheat would have given a larger yield but for "Rust," and even with this promises a fair return. Tobacco is largely planted. 

Tax

Mr. Geo: W. Graham, the officer in charge is active and energetic. His predecessor having taken but irregular interest in the freedmen, the change is very distasteful to many of the leading citizens; and he has encountered
