Reports outrage committed on Mr. Alvin Varner by a party of Ten or Twelve Armed men, who dragged him from his bed, between the hours of 12 and 3, on Friday morning the 28th, took him to a gully, threw a cloth over his head, and made real or pretended preparations to hang him. Their attention being attracted by a negro man, whom they found near the spot, and whom they whipped Mr. Varner escaped. [[stamp]] STATE OF VIRGINIA. BUREAU OF R. F. & A. L. *** RECD. HD. QRS. ASST.
