General
I have the honor to report that on Thursday Sept 3, I proceeded to Buckingham C.H. to be present at the hearing in matter of Complaint of Alvin Varner against citizens of Buckingham Co for assault on the night of August 27 & 28 /last.
The case excited much interest. five magistrate, on the bench, the prisoners represented by Messr BrooKe, Cabell, Handley & Cocke. Mr Hill conducting for Comwlth.
At the onset Mr Varner prejidiced his testimony greatly by reading from a prepared statement spite of my naming twice repeated before he went into court - instead of giving oral evidence In this he asserted, and afterwards re'asserted on cross examination, that the assailants wore masks or cloths with holes cut for the eyes & that he could not identify anyone.
