Officers will have much to do in settling cases after the corn crop matures.

But few contracts for rent of land or hire have been made - or talked of - with the blacks for next year and there seems to be a disposition on the  part of the whites to wait Micawber like "for something to turn up" what that something is they seem not to know.

But few criminal cases have been tried during the quarter, most of which were of too trifling a character to be noticed, yet much made of them. The civil authorities seem to act the principle of making an example of every case, and convict on [[strike through]] the [[/strike-through]] very flimsey evidence.

But few dependants at present. I fear however that the coming winter there will be an increase - the resources for their support be quite heavily taxed, this state of things will grow out of - as before observed - light crops. 

Much interest is manifested by the blacks in the cause of Education, and schools
