In cases where rent is paid for property occupied by the government, the Quartermaster’s Department, on the vacation of the premises, has usually repaired them & made good any damage caused by the occupation.

This might have been done in the present case by the Bureau officer & his accounts would have been allowed by the accounting officers of the Treasury.

And in our opinion, it may still be done with the same result.

In similar cases damages to property rented by the government have frequently been paid for, in whole or part, by increasing the amount of rent.
