Bu. of R.F. and A. Lands Hd. Qrs. 10th Sub. Dist. of Va. Alexandria, Va., Feby. 3d 1868. Respectfully returned to S.B. Smith, A.S.A. Comr. for report: as to how many freedpeople there are in the vicinity that will attend school: what provisions they have made for the support of a teacher, and any other information tending to show the expediency of renting a school-house as requested in the within communication. I should judge by your communication that a teacher has already be provided. Is it so? S.P. Lee Capt. and Bvt: Lt: Col. U.S.A. Sub. Asst. Com'r. Bu. of R.F. & A. Lands Office of A.S.A.C. Leesburg Feb. 4th 1868. Respectfully returned to Bvt. Lt. Col. S.P. Lee, S.A.C. with information that the number of pupils who will attend said school are estimated at 40. I would and have sent them a teacher whom they pay. I received books for them form Friends Benevolent Society, Philadelphia, Pa. I know of a place where the colored people were more in need of or more anxious for over a school than those at Upperville and I could make no other arrangements by which this subject could be attained.
