Asst Sub Asst Commr Freedmens Bureau

Sir
I beg leave to present to your notice the following statement of facts On Sunday night April 26th 1868 the usual quietness of Appomattox was broken in upon by a band of lawless men who rode through the Court House Square at a late hour yelling hooting discharging guns & pistols and otherwise making the night hideous.

They pursued their course westward and within a distance of two miles of the Court House visited two of the most prominent and best behaved (cold) men of the county: viz the pastor of (cold) church and a leading member of the Same (John North) The pastor Fleming Johnson was awaken out of a Sound Sleep by a tremendous thundering at his door and by the cry. "Open your door open your door or we will burn you out." He immediately arose and without taking time to dress opened the door whereupon three objects dressed mostly in white having their faces bound with white and [[begringed?]] with Smut rushed in They flourished long pistols and with them Severely punched the person of the pastor at the Same time declaring that they had just killed one nigger and had now come to kill him. They represented themselves as being soldiers who were killed
