am fully convinced from his voice that he is a prominent citizen a man who last Monday (April 20th) Said to me Uncle Fleming a number of the people here have been after me to drive you (Cold) people away from here and we can do it we can do it:- This foul outrage which I have but very imperfectly Stated have Spread consternation and dismay among the (cold) people of Appomattox County. They know not what to do or which way to turn. They feel that if such outrages can be at any time perpetrated upon them they are in a hopeless condition. The civil courts have never done them justice. The officers of the law have never lightened but rather added to their burdens. The whole people with but one or two exceptions have continually evinced a determination to oppress and degrade them. Having Seen heard & felt these things myself I can but earnestly beg and pray that Something effectual be done for the downtrodden and oppressed of Appomattox County.
