guilty parties are. It is not known by any of the murdered man's family consisting of a wife & her two children (young women children of her first husband) whether the parties were white or colored. Then were three or four of them - Rev Mr. Grimsley & his son very respectable people as well as Mr. Campbell on whose land the man Lee was living and in fact all citizens who knew the deceased, unite in saying he was an industrious inoffensive old man. 

He did not belong to the Loyal League nor in fact had he taken any part whatever in politics and I have yet to find a man white or black who can say one word derogatory of the good character of the victim of this foul outrage. The deepest interest is felt apparently by all classes and the authorities are making strenuous efforts to get some trace of the murderers. 

I have ascertained (& have communicated the same to the Commonwealths atty Mr Menifee, whose letter to me on this subject I enclose herewith) that these two daughters of the wife of Arthur Lee have been a source of considerable trouble to him   One of them was married and had trouble with her husband & he ran away or at all events they separated she remaining with her mother  The other daughter has given birth to an illegitimate child  A rumor reached me that these girls did not
