[[/stamp]] The island is required for defensive purposes and the Government should continue to hold it in possession. A.A. Humphrey Brig. Genl. of Engineers Commanding B.B. 23/957 Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands - Upon the foregoing statement of the Chief of Engineers that the title to Craney Island is vested in the U.S. and that it is required for defensive purposes, it will be turned over to the Engineer Department.
