Lieut
Jacob Bachr formerly private in Co. "E" 15th U.S.H. Artly, states that he contracted in May 1866 with R.D. Carter, living at Carter's Ferry, on the James River, Powhatan County, Va. - Mr. Carter has for four months owned Bachr a balance of $222.00/100 which he refuses to pay.

On Bachr applying for payment, he (Carter) attempted to strike him with a stick, and did strike his (Bachr's) wife in the breast - Carter also threatened to shoot Bachr if he ever asked him again for a settlement and did once bring out a double barrelled gun for that purpose -

Bachr lives on Carter's Farm. -

Transcription Notes:
All sign-offs at the end of a telegram are difficult to read. May say "Genl", though the last letter in some instances appears to be a lowercase "h" or "r", needs further review. The sign-off for telegram 159 was also difficult to read, and I am unsure if the numbers in the margins should be included. Spaces preserved to mimic margins of paper. Left align text and arrange in letter format. See first entry as example. ---------- Reopened for Editing 2023-12-20 08:49:39
