The Bvt. Brig. Genl. Asst. Comr. desires me to say in reply to your communication of the 6. inst. requesting that Dr. E.R. Carey be assigned to the Division made vacant by the resignation of F.J. Massey, A.S.A.C. that such an assignment can not be made in consequence of the professional duties at present required of him, and additional ones to be added by the Surg. in Chef. of the Dist. of Va.

You are therefore requested to make, without unnecessary delay, such suggestions as you deem most expedient in regard to the vacancy about to occur.

Very respectfully

Major,
I am directed by the Bvt. Brig. Genl. Asst. Comr. to enquire whether the present whereabouts is known of Alexander Payden, late of the 1. U.S.C. Cav., formerly residing in Norfolk, Va. If the man is found, direct him to make a new application for retained bounty, and endeavors will be made to collect the same for him.

The original application for this bounty was made through H. C. Percy, Cashier, Freedm. Sav. & Trust Co., on the 20. April 1866. It was subsequently discovered that the money had been paid to a man of the same name belonging to an other regiment.

Respectfully
Will A. Coulter
