Dear César:

Herein copy of letter received from Mr. Hanley. I never saw your letter to him, but anyway, it gives you the long awaited chance to meet this man. Also, enclosed, copy of cable received this morning.

S.C.C. His check has already been received and I have cabled the money over to Paul B., and cabled the letter to keep the painting in Paris. I did that at your suggestion, though I am very doubtful personally, as to the advisability of so doing!

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART: SALZ: Bob is writing you on this topic. My idea is, if my memory serves me right, that Salz is a small dealer in London whom Georges discovered last year and who has the customer who bought the Manet "Olympia" watercolor. What happened is that Brame probably either was in touch with Salz (who in his letter wrote as a private collector) or with his customer, and that Salz tried to double-cross Brame. You will recall that Paul B. wrote you that he had an offer of $17,000.?? In any case, I think we should immediately post Brame about what has been going on and of the answer the Museum of Modern Art has spontaneously sent.

MAX Epstein has been in this morning. Bob received him - nothing doing either for Picasso or anything else.

Mr. C. M. de Hauke,
Paris.
