Famed Statue at Rome is Bought by Germany

The Lancellotti Discobolus Is Sold for $327,000

ROME, June 19 (AP).- One of Rome's famous art treasures, the Lancellotti copy of the Discobolus, or Discus Thrower, by the ancient Grecian sculptor Myron, has been sold to Germany.

The statue, which brought 5,000,000 lire, plus 1,485,000 lire export tax, or $327,000 in all, has been transported already to the Munich Art Museum, although the transfer is still unannounced officially in either Italy or Germany. Germany will pay for it with credits under the clearing arrangements between the two countries. The Lancellotti family, which owned the staute, will be paid in lire.

The original Grecian statue, of the fifth century before Christ, is known to the world today only through copies made later by the Romans. Of these copies the Lancellotti is regarded as nearest the original and superior to the examples in the Vatican and the British Museum.
