Dear Jane:

As usual it would have been wiser to wait before writing you yesterday, as I did, as bright and early today your thesis at last reached me.

Let me congratulate you on this most interesting paper. It is concise though you bring out some of the main points, particularly that "objective realism" which is so very important to understand this artist. The different phases of DegasĀ“ talent are clearly indicated and I am especially glad that you place him in relation to the past and future, and without leaving out the connection with the literary movement of the time - which I always consider is so very important to do.

Now of course, I was a little surprised at the space you gave to the painting end, as I thought that it was going to be essentially about the sculptures, and in connection with this, should it be published anywhere, don't you think that it would be of interest to add the complete list of the statuettes with their corresponding names and numbers? It would give a definite practical angle and thus an indispensable reference to anyone who would be interested.

Of course I do appreciate your quoting and mentioning me, though I really deserve no credit and to you should go all the congratulations for your efforts.
