The Executive Committee of the American Missionary Association, by its representatives, beg leave to lay before you the following statement of facts with the accompanying petition.
1st The Association commences the work of Educating the Colored Children at Fortress Monroe and Hampton in April 1862, with fifty pupils, and have until recently sustained all the schools there.  There have been in these schools more than 2000 different scholars. The Association also sustained one, and a part of the time, two night schools for adults with an average attendance of 130.
2", This labor has been performed under great inconvenience, it being impossible to obtain convenient places for the schools, all the rooms used having been prepared by the Association without aid from Government.
