My dear Sir.

Let me reach over the hedge of weeks & months bristling with events that have intervened since I parted with you at Norfolk last winter, & shake hands again with a heart ful of thanks for what you have done & are doing for the freedmen. When I read your order (of the 28th I think) anxiously looking for some good news from Richmond I could but exclaim: "Thats like him, God bless him!" It has set all our hearts at rest, knowing
