Chief Quartermaster's Office,
DEPARTMENT OF VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA,
Fort Monroe, Va., June 7th 1865

Dear Captain
I am very sorry of my inability to furnish you with funds you require, at present, but hope in a very few days, that I shall be able to give you all you need. The money I expected to have given you has been absorbed in paying off discharged employees.

I am about to call the attention of the Q.M. General to the matter today. You shall have the first slice from the loaf when it comes.

From Gen Howard I learned that you have been quite sick. I hope you will soon be around again.

Yours truly
Wm L James

Capt Brown AQM
