As the Grand Jury met at Floyd C.H. in a few days I directed Calloway to meet me there and I would see the case investigated

Shortly after Calloways return Huff learning of Calloway having reported him to me, collected a party of his friends and proceeded to Calloways house at night and beat him severely; Calloway was unable to meet me at Floyd C.H. but several members of his family came and I saw that the case was laid before the Grand Jury, who indicted a number of the parties engaged in the affair.

I supposed warrants would be issued for the arrest of these parties but I now learn that under the law of the state it is only a "misdemeanor" and the parties are merely summoned to attend the next Circuit Court and answer the charges: Such a law is certainly no adequate protection to the Freedman.

I have endeavored to find Calloway and get affidavits from himself and family but -
