Your telegram was received the other day and I consulted with Genl. Howard. I think that the matter can be arranged.

t seems that I necessarily go out of the service with my regiment - that will be in two or three weeks. To remain in the service I must get a commission in some other organization in he military service.

At present I am senor Captain, 2d Mass. Cavalry promoted to Major but unable to be mustered because my regiment so soon leaves the service. Now I propose to try to get the appointment of Major in a colored cavalry regiment. Do you think it is asking too much? I do not and I think I can with proper backers get the appointment.

I have become deeply interested in my District
