As report of progress I would respectfully state I have the census nearly finished for 7 counties, viz Montgomery Floyd Pulaski Craig Giles & Roanoke & Smith

I have an agent at Wytheville but they have not got business running very extensively as yet. I would ask for authority to hire three employees, my old clerk whose assistance is simply indispensable. I must have a few Officers also. There are no troops in either of the 5 So Western Counties and of course I shall find some difficulty
