The character of Hume as to disloyalty is well known - he being one of the most bitter Rebels in this place; having before leaving, at the evacuation, preached to his Congregation (as stated to me - a few weeks since- by Chaplain Palin, who says he has written proof to substantiate the fact) the most rabbid, savage, unchristian, & blasphemous sentiments to his Congregation — invoking Divine Providence to aid them to "walk knee deep in Yankee Blood," that the "Northern Babes be killed at the Birth," that the "Tongues of the Yankees might cleave to the roofs of their mouths," that "they might be palsied," &c. and altogether the most disloyal, cruel, & heartless feelings expressed that I have ever heard ascribed to any of the worst Rebels, even among the Clergy.  I am positive he is still unconverted, so far as his loyalty is concerned, but, aside from this, the fact that he does not require, not intend to use the house for his own occupancy but to let it to other parties, and refuses to do so to me because of my association with the "Yankees" although I have offered him (in the event of his getting it back) a very heavy rent & an advance on what he says he will be able to get elsewhere, shows his determined hostility to the representatives of the Government, and
