Understanding by report (for we rarely ever see a newspaper unless brought by some market man, as to mails.  I suppose we are never to enjoy that favour again) that you are at the head of the freedmans bureau, I write to give you some information of the existing state of things among us & to make some inquiry as to the many helpless & suffering poor among those that have been so suddenly turned out to die, during the approaching long & cold winter.
