I recd yesterday a note from Jno A Brown, stating that he had had conversation with you in reference to Capt Barnes. & that you desired some statement from me concerning him.  Brown alludes to an opinion I gave him some months ago when he wanted a letter of commendation to Barnes.  I believed the man to be very different in character & felt obliged to give my opinion to my friend as he invited it.  Higher interests demand that you should ask in what the more favorable opinion consists.

I must state that since Jan. 14 I know nothing about him.  We became acquainted during [[/strikethrough]] M [[strikethrough]] CS.  We were on Gen Harland's staff.  My estimation of his character was made from many things which can't be written out.  I heard the men of his regiment, which was in our brigade, talk of
