NARA 189

"Log Hall" Plantation
Near Edward's Depot
Dec 30th

Maj. J.L. Horton
Jackson Miss

Sir
Your order prohibiting the removal of any of F.T. Cooper's cotton in which Ben Jones (Freedman) is interested has been rec'd & will be complied with.

Ben left this place in the summer & remained away till Mr Cooper commenced hiring hands to pick cotton he then returned & was paid for all of the cotton he picked, 75 cents per hundred. his step father Lewis Ashbury rec'd the money for him.

The squad in which Ben worked stands indebted to Mr Cooper several hundred dollars after being credited with all their share of the cotton so he would not have been entitled to anything even if he had complied with his contract & remained the year out.

As it is, he forfeited his share in the crop by deserting in the hour of need.

Mr Cooper's books are all here. I hope Sir you will have this matter investigated at once & justice rendered all parties

Respectfully
Jas. M. Pearson

P.S. Mr Cooper is in Summit Miss.
J.M.P.
